Historic Towns Initiative
In 2012 the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, wanted to take a fresh look at the national status of both ‘Heritage Towns’ and ‘Historic Walled Towns’ with a view to creating a single national identity for towns of this status. To this end the three towns of Westport, Youghal and Listowel were chosen to participate in a national pilot scheme, called the Historic Towns Initiative (HTI). The purpose of the pilot was to explore the potential of establishing a nationally recognised unified historic towns network; This process is ongoing involving a partnership between with the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, The Heritage Council and the three pilot towns.
In Westport, during 2013, a number of HTI projects were funded and successfully completed. We wish to build on this work by preparing a Heritage & Conservation Plan for Westport, which will set out a strategy to protect, conserve and enhance Westport’s heritage into the future.
To inform the preparation of the Westport Heritage and Conservation Plan, we are undertaking a public consultation process.
