Westport Greenway

In 2009 Westport Town Council was successful in an application for funding from the Department of Transport to upgrade and extend the existing Railway Walk into a high standard Greenway facility.  The Greenway facility caters for cyclists and pedestrians and has significantly improved links to adjacent housing developments, schools and municipal parking areas.

The Scheme comprises two sections and has an overall length of 3.50km.  The first section extends from Westport Quay to Altamont Street and includes connections to adjacent residential areas.  The second section extends from Altamont Street to Knockranny via the refurbished viaduct and includes a new access at Altamont Street.  See Westport Greenway for further details and Map.  The Westport Greenway has also been designated as a Sli na Slainte Route

Westport Smarter Travel

Smarter Travel Policy
'Smarter Travel - A Sustainable Transport Future' is the new transport policy for Ireland for the period 2009 - 2020.  The policy complements Transport 21 which recognises the vital importance of continued investment in Transport to ensure an efficient economy and one which promotes more sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling and use of public transport.

The Department have established a Fund of €50m which will be invested in the development of 5 demonstration towns for sustainable transport over the next five years.  These towns will be chosen by way of a two stage open National Competition.

In October 2009 Westport Town Council, in association with Mayo County Council, entered Westport Town and Environs in the National Competition.  This Stage 1 bid included an ambitious and innovative Smarter Travel Plan for Westport incorporating contributions made by a broad range of key stakeholders including community groups, Schools, Businesses, and the public.  The bid proposed a €6m investment for sustainable transport infrastructure including premium greenways (cycle and walkway) infrastructure, cycle friendly roads, home zones, and the development of a new travel centre at High Street Carpark to facilitate cycle and bus transport, as well as the reductions of speed limits to 30kph in key areas.

Success in the Competition could result in Westport becoming one of only a handful of nationally designated Smarter Travel demonstration towns and would provide significant funding to induce a modal shift from car use towards more sustainable methods of travel.

In December 2009, The Department of Transport announced  that Westport is one of eleven towns shortlisted to proceed to Stage 2 of the Competition for Smarter Travel Areas.  Announcement of the overall winners is eagerly anticipated.
