Recycling Facilities

There are two main types of recycling facilities in Mayo for use by householders: Recycling bring-banks are located in most towns and villages. These are the familiar "bottle banks" and contain facilities where the public can recycle bottles and jars as well as drink cans. Recycling centres (or civic amenity sites as they are also known) are a newer development. They consist of a wide range of recycling facilities, from car batteries to plastic bottles. There are two such facilities in Mayo: Rathroeen, Killala Road in Ballina and Derrinumera, near Newport Town, on the Castlebar-Newport Road.

The Derrinumera Civic Amenity site near Newport is a state-of-the-art landfill and it also houses impressive recycling segregation facilities.

Within Westport, Bottle Banks are located at:

  • Westport Quay
  • Corrib Oil, Castlebar Road
  • Mill Street / High Street Car Park
  • Westport Leisure Park Car Park
  • Sacred Heart Secondary School

A Clothing Bank is also in place in the Leisure Centre Car Park.
